The Sculpture Department at Virginia Commonwealth University is a major force in the School of the Arts and beyond. Our significance is best measured by the fact that we attract challenging, talented and curious students from around the state, country and world. Ours is one of the United States’ best undergraduate sculpture programs and with well over 100 undergraduate Sculpture majors we are the largest in the United States. Our students are drawn by the ever-increasing visibility of the department’s alumni and the reputation of a highly diversified and talented faculty.
The department’s 8 full-time faculty and various part-time and technical faculty represent a spectrum of directions and philosophical attitudes. Faculty interests range from formal to conceptual, from the concrete to the evanescent: wood, steel, computer imaging and 3-dimensional printing, plaster, plastics, clay, textiles, video, performance and robotics…. to name a few. This breadth of interests is presented to students and contributes to the comprehensive nature of our department. Students are exposed not only to traditional sculpture media, but encouraged to explore technology’s parameters and to pursue interdisciplinary activity.
Because of the size and sophistication of the School of the Arts and the University, we encourage Sculpture students to broaden their experience in other areas. By promoting a curriculum that encourages students to take a wide range of courses throughout the University, we stress links between art, science, the humanities and the world. As a consequence, Sculpture students have rich, productive associations with professors in many fields.
In addition to our broad array of faculty, we make a deep investment in our visiting artist program, importing significant artists, critics, curators and culture-makers on a regular basis for the public presentation of their work and ideas.
Sculpture students are encouraged to explore their potential by taking advantage of the varied resources that the department offers. Our goal is to provide students technical skills in addition to the vocabulary of discerning analysis and synthesis, so they can become full participants in the dialogue of our time. All of this takes place in an environment of high expectation regarding self-motivation, intellectual capacity and responsibility.
We are proud of the quality of art produced by our students and alumni. An equally great source of pride is the strength of bond that exists, long after graduation, between the faculty and the hundreds of students who have completed our program.
